Safety is a Corporate Leader’s Responsibility

By Erez Tsur, Former President, Carbyne

safety is a corporate leader responsibility

What does safety mean to us as corporate leaders? I sometimes ask myself this question and am intrigued by the myriad of meanings that come to mind. We all want safety for our family, friends, neighbors and colleagues. We want safety for our country, and we want safety for the world. And while governmental agencies offer public safety services such as emergency calling and response, what about the millions of private sector organizations employing billions of people globally? How can corporate leaders help and support the effort of making the earth a safer place to live?

This topic of public and private sector responsibilities also came up during one of my conversations with Israel’s ninth president, Shimon Peres. The brilliant orator shared a provocative idea with me: How would our world be different if it was run by companies rather than governments? President Peres, a veteran government politician, elaborated that many multinational companies often embody democracy rather than dynasty. Furthermore, the decision-making process of many of these multinational companies tends to be balanced and thoughtful towards their employees (citizens), and due to their global nature, more tolerant of peoples’ racial and ethnic backgrounds, and more positive results driven.

This had a profound impact on my thinking. While not all of us may agree with this proposition, and this is surely not a panacea for all that ails our world, this would cause many organizations to step up and fulfill their corporate responsibility to their stakeholders, including their workers who are the world’s citizens. Many of the world’s eminent companies including some of the best emergency medical services software companies and other technology companies alike already provide toll-free hotlines for their people to call for any issues ranging from health to financial to family care and more. Modern technologies like smart watches are at our sides to automatically notify public safety communication management officials using software solutions when we fall down the stairs. With the employees’ permission and proven compliance to privacy, companies can be the guardian angels when it comes to the safety of their most valuable asset – their people.

Leveraging technology and automation can improve communication during emergencies. This can apply to corporations and be extended to the families of employees. Being able to notify a loved one about an emergency before the arrival of paramedics will have a positive impact on the outcome of that emergency. In many countries, employers also have first responders and teams staffed to help employees in cases of emergencies. Technology can bring these teams together along with first responders to help address the emergency in a more efficient way.

The road to fulfilling a company’s corporate responsibility for the safety of their people is strewn with numerous challenges including infrastructure, resources, budgets, shareholder priorities, and more. Public safety call center software is evolving quickly, despite some who believe this is not fast enough. While we may not agree 100% with the bold proposition laid out by former President Shimon Peres, one topic we can all agree on is the importance of safety and security for ourselves and our families.
