Holiday-themed activities for kids, such as educational games and arts and crafts.

    Category: Education

People around the globe observe Halloween on the 31st of October. From the evening preceding November 1st's celebration of All Saints (or All Hallows' Day), we get the name Halloween. Western Christians mark the beginning of the three-day holiday known as Allhallowtide, which culminates on All Souls' Day, on this day. Halloween parties in Europe and North America are widely regarded as being secular and family-friendly.   Origins of All Hallows' Eves Samhain, a Celtic harvest festival observed in ancient Britain and Ireland, is considered by many to be Halloween's ancestor. The first of November, or Samhain as it is now known, marked the beginning of the ancient festival. During Samhain, the dead were believed to return to their homes. It was believed that at the end of each year, the spirits of the dead would depart for the afterlife. People would light bonfires on top of hills to scare away ghosts, and they would frequently wear masks and disguises so that the spirits wouldn't be able to tell who they were. Because of this, many people associate Halloween with stories about witches, hobgoblins, fairies, and even demons. Historically, Pope Boniface IV of the seventh century is credited with establishing All Saints' Day on May 13. As the years passed, the date eventually settled on November 1. All Hallows' Eve, or Halloween, is the evening of October 31st, the day before All Saints' Day. The transition to Halloween as a secular celebration did not occur until the middle of the nineteenth century. Middle nineteenth-century immigration to the United States brought with it a love of Halloween traditions that had been practiced in Ireland for centuries. In the twentieth century, Halloween expanded to become one of the most celebrated holidays in the United States, particularly among children.   Tonight is Halloween. Playing educational games like Online math games for kids, engaging in harmless pranks, decorating with carved pumpkins (jack-o'-lanterns), dressing up in masks and costumes, and going door to door in quest of treats are all common ways that people celebrate Halloween, which is a secular holiday. On Halloween, trick-or-treaters go door-to-door asking for candy and threatening to pull pranks on those who don't give them any. One common Halloween party activity is bobbing for apples or doughnuts. Macabre supernatural beings have become increasingly associated with the event. Educative games with a spooky Halloween theme have been increasingly popular in recent years. Kids may have a spooky good time playing instructional games designed just for mobile devices like the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch.
