Alloy 188, also known as Haynes® 188, is a cobalt-based superalloy widely recognized for its excellent high-temperature strength, oxidation resistance, and superior ductility. These attributes make Alloy 188 an ideal material for demanding applications in the aerospace, gas turbine, and power generation industries. Composition and Properties Alloy 188 is primarily composed of cobalt, with significant additions of nickel, chromium, and tungsten. The standard chemical composition typically includes: Cobalt (Co): ~37-43% Nickel (Ni): ~20-24% Chromium (Cr): ~20-24% Tungsten (W): ~13-16% Iron (Fe): ~3% Manganese (Mn): ~1.25% Silicon (Si): ~0.4-1.2% Carbon (C): ~0.05-0.15% This specific composition grants Alloy 188 its high mechanical strength, exceptional oxidation resistance, and good resistance to sulfide environments, even at temperatures exceeding 1093°C (2000°F). Key Features of Alloy 188 Sheet High-Temperature Strength: Alloy 188 maintains its strength at elevated temperatures, making it suitable for components exposed to extreme heat. Its creep and rupture resistance are particularly beneficial for turbine engines and other high-stress applications. Oxidation and Corrosion Resistance: The alloy’s high chromium and nickel content provides excellent resistance to oxidation, even at elevated temperatures. Additionally, the alloy resists scaling and corrosion in high-temperature environments, enhancing the lifespan of components. Good Ductility and Formability: Alloy 188 sheet material is highly formable, enabling it to be readily fabricated into complex shapes. Its ductility also allows for easy welding and machining, which is essential for manufacturing intricate components. Sulfidation Resistance: The alloy's ability to resist sulfidation in high-temperature environments makes it particularly valuable in gas turbine engines, where exposure to sulfur-containing gases can lead to rapid degradation. Applications of Alloy 188 Sheet Alloy 188 sheet is used in a variety of high-performance applications, particularly where high strength, durability, and resistance to extreme temperatures are critical. Key applications include: Turbine Engines: Due to its high-temperature stability and oxidation resistance, Alloy 188 is commonly used in gas turbine engines, including combustion chambers, flame holders, and afterburners. Aerospace Components: The alloy is also utilized in aerospace applications that require materials to withstand extreme conditions, such as in jet engines and exhaust systems. Power Generation: In the power generation industry, Alloy 188 is used for components that operate under high thermal and mechanical stress, such as heat exchangers and furnace parts. Conclusion Alloy 188 sheet stands out for its exceptional performance in high-temperature and corrosive environments. Its unique combination of strength, ductility, and resistance to oxidation and sulfidation makes it a preferred choice for critical components in the aerospace, power generation, and gas turbine industries. Whether in the form of sheets, plates, or other fabricated components, Alloy 188 delivers reliable performance under the most demanding conditions.
