    Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

    Category: Health

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a chronic condition that includes difficulty holding attention, impulsiveness and hyperactivity. With more than 3 million Americans diagnosed every year, it is one of the most common special needs conditions that exist in the US today. While the abundance of this condition may lead one to believe that it is simply a normal part of many people’s lives in our society, those who suffer from it know that it can lead you to feel anything but normal. ADHD can be very challenging and make it difficult in many important areas of life, such as relationships, work and school. Distraction and inattention often leads to tasks not being finished, lack of attention when someone is speaking and an overall disorganization. There is hope of improvement however. There are tried and tested strategies to help one improve and function well as a happy, productive and successful individual, regardless of their added challenges in life. The most common forms of treatment today are therapy and medication. While these strategies will help someone cope with and reduce the symptoms of ADHD, there does not yet exist a complete cure. Studies have shown that other methods of managing symptoms include weighted blankets, creating space, and using planning apps with calendars and organized lists. Weighted blankets in particular are one of the more interesting strategies because it uses the physical feeling of compression that provides a sensory comfort. There are many success stories of people with ADHD that have achieved tremendous success. Some of the better-known individuals include Channing Tatum, Richard Branson and Michael Phelps. These individuals not only have overcome their disability, but also attribute much of their success to learning to triumph over the challenges to achieve their desired goals. While challenging, these individuals have proven ADHD doesn’t have to inhibit anyone from going for and achieving their dreams.
