Creative authorship was, until recently, assumed to be an exclusively human endeavor. Copyright law has therefore historically been built on the premise that creativity originates from human intellect, skill and imagination. However, rapid advances in generative artificial intelligence (‘AI’) have begun to challenge this foundational assumption. AI systems are now capable of producing a wide range of creative outputs, including paintings, songs, musical compositions, audiovisual works, literary text, and other forms of expressive content.
