Summer is a season of vacations, sandals, beaches, and outdoor activities. While it may be enjoyable, it can also be tough on your feet. One of the most common foot problems during the warmer months is cracked heels, medically known as heel fissures. What starts as dry skin can quickly turn into deep, painful cracks that make walking uncomfortable and increase the risk of infection. Cracked heels occur when the skin around the heel becomes excessively dry, thick, and loses its natural flexibility. As pressure is placed on the heel during walking or standing, the dry skin begins to split, forming visible cracks known as fissures.
