Jamdhani Cotton Sarees Jamdhani or jamdani is a hand woven technique of Bengal that creates patterns of several colors and designs on cotton or silk sarees. Jamdhani hand weaving is a necessary accompaniment for Bengal sarees. There are atleast six varieties of Bengal handlooms, each one having its own style. To improve the aesthetic appeal, it takes the form cotton and gold thread weaving to create motifs of geometric patterns and floral designs in colorful hues. The undisputed best in this range is the jamdhani which still continues to retain its original grandeur and sophistication. The original version is referred to as Deccai jamdhani. Based on the variations in the jamdhani weave, sarees can be named as Deccai jamdhani, known for its colorful motifs, the shantipur jamdhani for its soft texture, the Tangail jamdhani for its traditional borders and the Dhonekai jamdhani for its colorful hues. So universal is the appeal, that today jamdhani is an inclusion in the making of some of the traditional varieties of cotton and silk handlooms, such as the Banaras, Venkatagiri, uppada, kanchivaram, Dharmavaram and Mysore sarees. Jamdhani Cotton Sarees having some special features like some of the traditional motifs include Chameli jasmine and Gainda buti marigold. The most attractive design features of the jamdhani saree is the paisley motif. The jamdhani is a method by which the design motifs are added by hand during the time of weaving thus resulting in an embroidery effect. The method of production is similar to tapestry work.
