Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a form of artificial insemination employed to address infertility caused by issues with sperm quality. This technique involves the careful preparation of sperm, including the removal of immotile spermatozoa, prostaglandins, infectious agents, or antigens. This sperm washing process results in a higher sperm concentration, which can then be directly placed into the uterus around the time of ovulation, increasing the chances of fertilization. Unlike earlier methods of artificial insemination, where sperm was placed in the vagina, IUI offers a more refined and successful approach. It can be coordinated with the natural ovarian cycle or used in conjunction with fertility-enhancing medications. IUI procedure allows a greater number of motile sperm to reach the egg. By washing the sperm, unwanted cells are eliminated, and the remaining motile sperm are concentrated in a small volume of culture media. Subsequently, this concentrated sperm sample is introduced into the uterus using a transcervical catheter.
