Sagres in the Algarve Portugal is a great place to surf
Category: Travel
Some little food pleasures of Sagres that I miss every time I go away to name just a few: the alfarroba cake, the amendoa e gila cake, my favourite fish is a red fish called cantaril. Surfcamp Sagres is an incredible place, a peninsula in the Southwestern tip of the Iberian peninsula!, the Iberian peninsula “chin” I thought as a child, Lisbon was the nose, and I didn’t fathom what Sagres was back then. But now after so many years, yes is so familiar in a way, the Iberian peninsula “chin” that I first realized in the early geography lessons in my primary school near Barcelona. Sagres has lots of different coast orientations. Part of the coastline is protected as part of the natural park. You can only get to that part of the cost through off-road tracks which are great for hiking and biking. As far as surf is concerned the south coast beaches only fire when the swell is big on the west coast or when the levante wind blows. With the exception of Tonel beach, Tonel has the same exposure as west coast beaches. However Tonel is a complicated beach with a big rock in the middle of the beach inside the water that provokes very strong currents depending on the tide. It is much better to go to the west coast beaches, further up in Vila do Bispo Castelejo and Cordoama or go to Carrapateira praia do amado or even further vale figueiras or Arrifana. So to sum up with the exception of July and August mostly, there are quite a few days per Month were surfing is fine in the South Coast beaches of Sagres like Beliche or even Mareta in central Sagres. In the sagressurfcamp we drive you to the best surfing beach of the day to have your surf lessons and back, so you don’t have to worry about that. The Portuguese spoken in Sagres is a very difficult dialect that even the Portuguese don’t understand when the Sagres locals really apply themselves. Some people say that the dialect in Sagres sounds like the dialect spoken in the Azores islands. Anyway Sagres has lots of history. The Portuguese set to sail the 7 seas from Sagres, this was the equivalent of NASA in the fifteenth century, lots of talents were pooled together to perfect the navigation and the ships that brought so many rewards to the Portuguese. They went as far as Japan, that why words like bread and thank you in Japanese have Portuguese origin: Pao and Arigato. It all started in Sagres sponsored by the Prince of Sagres in the fourteenth century. Sagres is so humble that unless you read the history books you don’t imagine that Sagres had this incredible past.
