In most day schools, co-curricular activity is squeezed into the gaps — a forty-minute games period, a rushed rehearsal before the annual function, a club that meets when the timetable allows. Talent is identified late and developed shallowly. Residential schools operate on a different clock. With students on campus through the afternoon and evening, sport, music, theatre and clubs occupy real hours in the weekly schedule rather than leftover ones. This is the structural reason boarding schools have historically produced disproportionate numbers of national-level sportspeople and performers.
