A new Celica Supra launched for the 1982 model year powered by a new 2.8-liter inline six-cylinder churning out 145 horsepower and 155 pound-feet of torque and started at $14,098. Engine output would steadily climb throughout this generation’s run to top out at 161 horsepower and 169 pound-feet of torque in 1986. A standard five-speed manual and available four-speed automatic remained as the transmission options. FIRST GENERATION (A40/A50; 1978) On Jan. 1, 1979, Toyota officially introduced the Supra in the US as an offshoot of the Celica lineup with a base price of $10,118. A 2.6-liter inline six-cylinder engine with 110 horsepower and 136 pound-feet of torque powered the Celica Supra. A five-speed manual transmission was standard, while a four-speed automatic was available as an option. To accommodate the larger six-pot engine, the front of the car was stretched by approximately 5-inches over the standard Celica. SECOND GENERATION (A60; 1981) The Supra continued to be based on the Celica for its second generation that first appeared in 1981, and also continued to be known as the Celica XX in its home market too. THIRD GENERATION (A70; 1986) Considered a very high-tech car at the time, the third generation of Supra saw it separate entirely from the Celica, with the Celica going to the FWD Corona platform, while the Supra remained RWD, sharing its platform and engines with the Japanese market Toyota Soarer. FOURTH GENERATION (A80; 1993) Isao Tsuzuki served as the project leader for several design, product planning, and engineering teams that launched the A80 programme in February 1989. A final A80 design idea from Toyota Technical Centre Aichi was accepted and frozen for production in late 1990 by the middle of 1990. In A70 bodies, the initial test animals were hand-built in the latter part of 1990, and the initial A80 prototypes were hand-built in the following year. FIFTH GENERATION (J29/DB; 2019) The fifth-generation Supra, a member of Toyota’s Gazoo Racing (GR) line of high-performance vehicles, was introduced in January 2019 after spending 17 years off the market as the GR Supra. It was created in collaboration with BMW, using the chassis and many components from the BMW Z4 (G29). The 4- and 6-cylinder turbocharged engines were sourced from BMW, and the rear-wheel drive system from the previous Supra was maintained. The fifth-generation Supra is marked with the BMW model codes “J29” or “DB,” but Toyota used the “A90” and “A91” codes in promotional and marketing materials to preserve the Supra’s lineage from the previous generation. Along with the Z4, the GR Supra is produced at the Magna Steyr facility in Graz, Austria.
