While both transmissive and reflective LCD technology have distinct advantages over traditional LCD technology, it is the reflective LCD technology that has the most significant advantage over traditional LCD technology in terms of performance. While a reflective LCD allows us to see the screen very clearly in bright sunlight, an transmissive LCD allows us to see the screen vividly in dim light or in a low-light environment. However, the LED backlight panel has the additional capability of supplying light that can penetrate the semi-reflective film on the back of the screen, which is why it is referred to as a reflective LCD in this context. The reflective LCD is a term that is commonly used to refer to the transflective LCD that is on the front of the screen and can reflect sunlight; however, the reflective LCD is a term that is often used to refer to a semi-reflective film that is on the back of the screen that can reflect sunlight and it is common to hear people refer to the reflective when they are discussing the reflective LCD. Aside from the fact that it is extremely expensive, it has a number of other disadvantages as well as advantages. Due to the prohibitively high cost of semi-reflective film, even though the technology for transflective sunlight readable LCD is extremely mature, it will only be used in high-end electronic products due to the prohibitively high cost of semi-reflective film. Due to the prohibitively expensive nature of transflective LCD technology, this is the case. It would not be as harmful to our eyes as a transmissive LCD in the same situation, however, and would not offer the same level of protection as a reflective LCD.
