The Premier League elites who didn’t get the title they deserved

    Category: Sports

These players prove the fact that you don’t always get what you deserve, you just get what you get. These players have earned respect, admiration, awards, and in some cases even European titles. But by some twist of fate, these players always seemed to slip up as soon as the football came closer to home. These are some of the top players who have failed to win the English Premier League title during the course of their career. Shay Given Before anything else, let’s face the fact that Given has been around in the Premier League for the past 20 years and has perennially figured on the list of the League’s best custodians. The Irishman has stood tall in discipline and consistency for whichever squad he has played and one could say luck and poor decision-making have played equal parts in Given not being a part of any League-winning side yet. He has led Newcastle into the Champions League and made a number of title charges with the same team and left Manchester City the very year that Mancini took charge and led the club to a long-awaited Premier League title. Gianfranco Zola A real darling of the fans at Stamford Bridge known for his dribbling and scoring skills, Zola picked up the PFA Player of the Year twice and led Chelsea to Cup Winners’ Cup, FA Cup and League Cup victories in spectacular fashion. But the Premier League title seemed to elude him despite his best efforts. Though he went on to win the Serie A with Napoli, critics say another two to three year association with Chelsea might as well have turned Zola’s fortunes around. Matt Le Tissier The Southampton legend, as fate would have it, will always be known for the heights that he could have achieved than what he did. A truly sensational midfielder, Le Tissier has a goals-to-matches ratio of 161 in 443 games of his senior career, which is phenomenal for a medio. The player also has a penalty conversion rate amounting to 47 out of a total 48 that he has taken. But Le Tissier never quite got around to winning a League title which one could say was due to the fact that he played for an average side. He only made 8 appearances for the senior England football side but couldn’t really make a mark. In 2013, he became a Hall of Famer alongside the likes of Sir Bobby Charlton and George Best. Steven Gerrard As a reader, you probably saw this name coming a mile away. Truly a living legend of our times, generations of Liverpool fans will be indebted to this ‘One Club Man’. Arguably one of the best midfielders in English football history, a leader, a sharp shooter from distance, big match player, Gerrard wore many honours but never got to wear a Premier League medal around his neck. Among a list of honours as extensive as his fan base, he is the only player to have scored a goal in a League Cup final, an FA Cup final, a UEFA Cup final and a Champions League final. Gerrard earned respect from every football fan and will be remembered fondly for his ability to turn a match on its head.
