To worship Lord Shiva the Vedic way, you begin seated on a clean asana with achaman, the pavitri ring and purification of the body and seat - then the protective lamp, the Swasti Vachan, the sankalpa, and the worship of Ganesha and Gauri, before the Abhisheka of milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugar, Panchamrit and finally Gandhodaka. That is the order the scriptures give, and it has not changed in centuries.
